EL NINO COLADA
In late 2007, I submitted another work for the McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award in Langwarrin. The concept was enlarging an Art Deco juicer to function as a decommissioned water fountain. Edward Colless referred to it as an 'amusing pop travesty, though the kitsch appeal is all too familiar and outworn' (The Australian, 10 December 2007). I'm taking that as a win.
After removing 'El NiƱo Colada' from McClelland, I moved it up to my Auntie's property in Kinglake as a venue for people to view the work. On February 7, 2009 it was destroyed in the Black Saturday fires along with 'Court' and everything else on the property bar the family VL Commodore.
Here's a shot of my cousins Lola, Tully & I hanging out in the juicer on their Kinglake property.
